The Growth future of DTG Printing

Out of all of the modern T-shirt printing techniques, direct to garment printing (DTG) is the newest and also the most approachable method for those who are not acquainted with the industry. Basically, DTG works like your office printer but instead of injecting ink directly onto paper, it does so on garments like Tshirts.

According to research and consulting firm Future Market Insights, the DTG printing industry was valued at $1.76 billion in 2018, and that number is expected to increase to $2.31 billion by 2023.

One of the biggest reasons for the growth of DTG printing is the buying habits of today’s consumers. Millennials are increasing their spending for graphic printed clothing featuring unique designs that are created through digital textile printing. T-shirts, in particular, are becoming more fashionable and trendy, driving the market value for DTG printing. The demand from millennials for more DTG printed t-shirts, long sleeve t-shirts, ¾ length tees, tank tops, and other items of clothing are expected to be a key factor that impacts the overall value of the DTG printing industry in future.

Contributing factors that have helped increase the value of printing on fabric:
    • The growing demand for sustainable printing
    • Faster adaptability for clothing lines
    • New emerging technologies in the fabric printing industry
    • The reduced cost of printing digitally
    • The growth of ecommerce clothing sales
    • The influx of creative design in fashion
    Direct to Garment Inks

As the demand for DTG clothing increases, so too will the demand for DTG inks. Inks like KODAK and DTGPRO are inexpensive compared to past pricing and serve the industry well. DTG Printing Outlook

The popularity of DTG printing will rise as the consumer demand for printed designs on t-shirts and other clothing expands. This increase in consumer demand will grow the value of the DTG printing industry by about y 31% by 2023. The impact DTG printing has and will continue to have on the ink industry is tremendous, to keep up with the fashion industry’s seasonal clothing lines.

The advancements in DTG printers in the last 10 years are amazing. First, we have printers with recirculating print heads or wet-capping stations. This keeps the heads from clogging and saves on wasted ink. Second, stand-alone and built-in pre-treat and humidity systems are available. Humidity systems create a more stable environment for the printers. Pretreat machines ensure even coatings on garments.

Many people wonder if direct to garment printing is as durable as screen printing. If properly cared for, it is pretty comparable. “Properly” means washing in cold water and hang drying. Heat is the enemy of most decorated apparel.

DTG printing has basically gone from a functioning prototype to a multi-million-dollar industry. Direct to garment printing is really at the explosive growth stage in its development cycle. We can be excited to see what amazing changes DTG printer manufacturers will bring us in the future.
